This book is the first systematic quantitative assessment ofthe dual difficulties of mitigating the aging of the Chinese population at thesame time as controlling the overall size of the population. It argues thatappropriately and gradually relaxing birth control policies in China can effectivelymitigate the enormous economic pressure China will face from the aging of thepopulation and simultaneously keep the size of the population within acceptablelimits, thus realizing a strategic equilibrium between the pressures exerted bythe size and aging of the population.
