Evanescent Cities" is a photographic exploration of the rapidly changing area of Long Island City, Queens and Greenpoint and Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The book registers the imprints, textures and spaces of an older, grittier sensibility and architecture of working class neighborhoods, juxtaposed with a smoother, seamless, technology centered world of glass and steel that is becoming ubiquitous. A state of mind that is both illusionary and tethered is evoked, as one feels frozen in an uneasy dream between epochs. "Evanescent Cities" presents a subjective, fragmentary vision. It aspires to an awareness of transition itself and the reorganizing of the shape of space by both older and newer forms of architecture, thereby altering our sense of perception. The monograph will expand, and act as a catalyst for, discussion on a myriad of topics relating to architecture from the viewpoint of one visual artist. The intuitive approach of a photographer to the depiction thespace, light and form of a particular built environment, coupled with an understanding of the historical context of development in this particular urban area, creates a different kind of visually philosophical, poetic and literary approach to the phenomenon of building, and of the individual existing within this world. Although there are no people shown in the photographs, their very absence increases and merges with a sense of presence. Both the content and the psychological state that is elicited by unique depictions of everyday spaces and the rapid transitions occurring there, will interest a range of scholars, architects, urbanists, writers, photo book collectors and artists, both within and outside of the architectural and photography worlds. The photographer's approach and methods of both looking and rendering, are well suited to the exploration of the various spatial mysteries inherent in structures and the voids between them. The photographs document the collage, layering, and reflections that are already evident in the modern landscape, naturally occurring and easily seen, but rarely noticed. "Evanescent Cities" will provide a lyrically incisive view of the interplay between the individual and spaces and structures in flux." | Evanescent Cities by Patrick O'hare, Paper over Board | Indigo Chapters
